How’s Australia celebrating Australia Day?

Thursday, 25 January 2018 2:41:59 am Australia/Sydney

Fireworks, picnics, parades and food - Australia Day is full of fun and (mostly) free events! Here’s how Australia’s celebrating our National Day.

    • Highlight events at Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour has a host of events planned out through the day. There’s definitely something for you. Here’s some of our picks:

  • Wugulora Indigenous Morning Ceremony at 7:45am: A traditional performance of song and dance to recognise the original custodians of our land.

  • Lord Mayor’s Citizenship Ceremony at 10:30am: The welcoming of Australia’s newest citizens.

  • Salute to Australia at 11:30am: The Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force pay tribute to our nation with a 21-gun salute, the national anthem, a handling display and the tug and yacht ballet on the water.

  • Australia Day flyover at 11:50am: Red Berets, Qantas and Russian Roolettes fly over Sydney Harbour.

  • Australia Day Regatta at 1:30pm: Now in its 182nd year, this regatta sees over 100 boats race around the harbour.

Throughout the day there will also be festivals, activities and events in The Rocks, Barangaroo Reserve and the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Or, check out the street party at Circular Quay. We hear they’re taking over the street from 11.30am and that the fireworks have been moved there this year!

Spend some quality family time as veteran, vintage and classic vehicles come together for this annual event! Not just for motorheads, there are plenty of installations, art displays, and live entertainment such as Peppa Pig performances for the young ones. There’ll also be live local performances, as well yoga sessions.

Head over to Docklands Harbour for the fireworks display at 9pm.

Yup, you read that right. Apparently quite a thing in Brisbane, the hotel has been hosting its annual “cocky races” where punters literally race their roaches to win the big bucks. Entry is via gold coin donation, which is given to charity.

There’s other fun stuff to keep you entertained all day, like live bands and a dunking machine. First race starts midday!

Head to this foodie fest outside of Brisbane at towns like Airlie Beach, Longreach, Charters Towers and Rockhampton, where pop-up stalls feature the best fodder in the area for the event’s second year.

  • Survival Perth, Ozone Reserve

Reconciliation meets celebration in this display of indigenous performances, celebrating Australian and Torres Strait Islanders through dance, music, art and food.

Or, head to the official site of the city’s celebrations right on the waterfront. Not just a prime spot to catch the fireworks display, it will be transformed into an entertainment zone with activities and events for kids of all ages. Look forward to amusement inflatables, a ferris wheel, pony and camel rides, sheep shearing and whip-cracking demonstrations, freestyle and motocross shows, science activities, mazes and more than 10 waterslides that are perfect for beating the heat!

Starting 6pm from Franklin St with the Military March and Band officially kicking off the celebrations in Adelaide, look forward to concerts in Elder Park where you can picnic as you await the spectacular fireworks. No clear indication from the organisers on when exactly the fireworks start, but we reckon you should get there fairly ahead of sunset to get a good spot.

Do note also that the organisers are hoping to have a waste-free celebration. So help them out where you can!

Gold Coast

Not quite happening on Australia Day, but it’s still worth popping by this pop-up concert featuring local acts like One Day, Polish Club, Cosmic Psychos, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Rackett.

That said, HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY, mate!
