What is a Virtual Run?

A virtual run is a fun run that can be run at any location. You can walk, run, use a treadmill, or participate in another race. Any distance, anywhere, any time; it’s the event for everyone!

Virtual run essentially make use of your current mobile fitness app to monitor your progress! 

Some virtual race work with different non-profit organization and foundations, you can help make a difference from participating in virtual race. Like what? 

For instance, Virtual Run (https://www.imfvirtualrun.com/) raise funds from virtual runs, the funds go towards the ongoing work of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation, which assists indigenous communities to promote running, healthy lifestyles to complement existing indigenous community health initiatives.

Other virtual run offer medals for completing the distance you've signed up for. How do you get the medal? Once you complete the race within the period given by the organizers, you have to complete the race and upload your records into their system (website). 


From there, the organizers will match the distance completed and proceed to mail out the themed medals to you. 

Organizers get creative with the theme so almost every other week you see something new for you to join.

How is such a structure good? 

Virtual Racing is motivation for those who are just starting out and like the idea of something for your effort or those who are looking for an extra reward for their training runs between events. Virtual racing can also appeal to those who don't want to be part of a big event, but still want to challenge themselves. 

You can run, walk, hike, even crawl, the race distance wherever you want. You can run/walk indoors on a treadmill, around your neighborhood or hike the trails.  It’s a virtual race, so you complete it when and where you want to.

Is it free?

Well, let's just say there's no free lunch. 
You have to spend a small fee which is going to the organizers as well as for your themed medals that would be sent to you. However, this is typically way way cheaper than the marathons you usually join.

Keep yourself hydrate before, during and after exercise

If you do not drink enough water, you dehydrate. Dehydration can lead to a decrease in physical activity performance and may adversely affect your health. Remember it is important to drink water before, during, and after exercise.

 

Water is essential to maintain blood volume, regulate body temperature and allow muscle contractions to take place. During exercise, the main way the body maintains optimal body temperature is by sweating. Heat is removed from the body when beads of sweat on the skin evaporate, resulting in a loss of body fluid.

 

If you're going to be exercising for more than 60 minutes, a swig of water probably won't cut it. That's because your body loses sodium and potassium as well as water. This can lead to issues like confusion, muscle cramps and even water intoxication (too much water and not enough sodium in the body).

Losing a few pounds of body weight after exercise can put strain on the body and result in uncomfortable side effects like muscle cramps, dizziness, and fatigue. To prevent sweating away the water that keeps us hydrated, have a water bottle at the ready.

Get moving, even if you don’t feel like it

We all get it. When it’s cold, when you’ve had one too many late nights in the office, when the kids have been especially rowdy, when you just don’t feel like it.

Choose to get up and get out with these tips.

 

1. Do it for yourself
Don’t look at that neighbour running about, looking perky and fresh each time no matter how many times you’ve seen them run past your windows. Don’t look at the people lifting impossibly heavy weights or pumping push-ups endlessly.

Look at yourself and do it your way. Instead of taking the lift all the way up to the office, walk up to the third storey before hopping onto the lift; or park a little further from the mall than usual. If you’re a drama addict, prop your tablet or tv screen in front of a treadmill, and just walk as you watch. Before you know it, you’d have covered a lot more distance than you thought you could do.

 

2. Do it at your pace

Everyone is better at something. If weights excite you and consistently challenge you to improve your form and performance, go for it! Doesn’t matter if your friend or acquaintance is increasing their stack faster than you are. Keep yourself comfortable because you know yourself best.

 

3. Do it with a partner or your pup

Exercise is great for quality time. Instead of always heading to a bar or grabbing a cuppa, switch up the routine and head to the park or the lake for a walk/jog and catch up at the same time.

And, when all fails, look at your pet dog. Look into those eager eyes, waiting for you to pick up the leash and take it to the dog park. Don’t disappoint them, you know you don’t have it in you to do that.

Push yourself, even if it’s just for 10 minutes, and keep moving for a healthier and happier you!
